Henley 2nd XI were beaten by 112 runs away at Eversley on Saturday, but there were positives to take from a challenging afternoon, including 2nd XI debuts for youngsters George Piercy and Joe Raymond as the club continued to provide opportunities for its developing players.

Captain Jack Biddulph won the toss and elected to field, with Henley facing an Eversley side that eventually posted a substantial 272-8 from their 50 overs.

Henley made an early breakthrough when Jon Denning removed Magowan for seven, but Eversley responded through a strong partnership between Ford and Fortmann. The pair added 84 for the second wicket, taking the home side from 43-1 to 127-2 and giving their innings a solid platform.

Toby Seward eventually broke the partnership by dismissing Fortmann for 48 before following up shortly afterwards with the important wicket of Ford for 61. When Biddulph then removed Arif for five, Eversley had been pegged back to 141-4 and Henley had an opportunity to restrict the final total.

However, Perkin and Cummings changed the momentum of the innings with an attacking fifth-wicket partnership. Cummings made 46 from just 35 balls while Perkin reached 54, their contributions carrying Eversley beyond 200 and setting up a strong finish.

Henley continued to take wickets, with Denning dismissing both Cummings and Perkin and Seward adding two further victims. Seward finished with an impressive 4-40 from his ten overs, while Denning returned 3-57.

There was also an encouraging first taste of 2nd XI cricket for Raymond. Given the ball by Biddulph, the youngster bowled three overs for just 12 runs without conceding a wide or no-ball – valuable experience against Division One opposition.

Faced with a target of 273, Henley needed a strong start but were soon under pressure at 42-3 after the losses of Denning, Seward and Desai.

That brought Biddulph together with Alex Tunnadine and the pair produced Henley's best period of the innings. They combined positive strokeplay with some determined resistance, adding 76 for the fourth wicket and moving the score to 118.

Tunnadine led the scoring with an excellent 47 from 48 balls, including six fours and two sixes, before being caught and bowled by Fortmann. Biddulph continued the fight, making 40 from 56 deliveries with three fours and two sixes, but his dismissal at 131-5 left Henley with an increasingly difficult task.

Will Hammersley contributed 20 and Atharv Gupta added 13, but Eversley steadily worked their way through the lower order. Arif finished with 4-41 and Laithwaite took 3-34 as Henley were dismissed for 160 in 35.4 overs.

Piercy, another youngster making his 2nd XI debut, took on the wicketkeeping duties and finished unbeaten with the bat, completing a valuable first experience of cricket at this level.

While the result went comfortably Eversley's way, Henley still collected seven league points and the afternoon provided another opportunity to expose promising young players to the demands of higher-level senior cricket. For Piercy and Raymond in particular, the step up represents an important part of their development within Henley CC, while the performances of Seward, Denning, Tunnadine and captain Biddulph provided the experienced backbone to an otherwise difficult afternoon.
