Henley 2nd XI produced a spirited response with the bat but were ultimately unable to chase down an imposing Falkland total at the Brakspear Ground on Saturday, going down by 51 runs in an entertaining Division One encounter.

Falkland won the toss and chose to bat, making a positive start through Bird and Piper before Denning made the first breakthrough, having Bird caught by Biddulph for 27 with the score on 41.

Seward then removed Piper for 28 at 78-2, but the key period of the innings followed as Brown and Field took control. The pair combined for a substantial third-wicket partnership, initially rebuilding before increasingly taking the attack to the Henley bowlers.

Brown reached his half-century from 47 balls, with Field following shortly afterwards, and the partnership eventually passed 150 as Falkland moved beyond 200.

Seward finally broke the stand when Brown was trapped lbw for an excellent 101 from 83 balls, an innings containing nine fours and four sixes. Field followed not long afterwards for 77, lbw to Mordt, leaving Falkland 253-4.

Henley responded well during the closing stages. Seward finished an excellent spell with 3-52 from his ten overs, while Mordt collected 2-51.

The most dramatic moment, however, was still to come.

With Falkland looking to maximise their total, Donovan produced a superb hat-trick, removing Pool for 20 before dismissing Reeves and Jacob Hamlin with successive deliveries. His burst suddenly reduced Falkland from 315-6 to 315-9 and gave Henley the opportunity to collect maximum bowling points.

Denning completed the job by bowling Seddon for a rapid 39, Falkland eventually dismissed for 327 in 48.5 overs. Donovan finished with 3-50, Denning claimed 2-73 and, importantly, Henley had fought back strongly enough to take all ten opposition wickets.

Faced with a demanding chase, Henley suffered an early setback when Hammersley departed for four and Desai followed for seven, leaving the home side 30-2.

Seward and Brock began the recovery, adding 59 before Seward was lbw for 22 at 89-3.

Brock was by now playing with increasing fluency. He reached fifty from just 37 deliveries and found an excellent partner in Tunnadine as the pair began to put Falkland under some genuine pressure.

The fourth-wicket partnership took Henley from 89 to 185, Brock finding the boundary regularly during a superb innings of 88 from 74 balls, including 15 fours.

His dismissal brought an end to a potentially match-changing innings, but Tunnadine continued the fight. He passed fifty from 51 balls and struck seven fours and two sixes in his 61 from 64 deliveries before being run out with the score on 209.

At that point the required rate and loss of wickets began to tell.

Mordt and Denning fell in quick succession before Biddulph and Donovan attempted to keep the chase alive. Donovan contributed a useful 21 from 18 balls, while Gupta remained unbeaten on 11 as Henley continued to battle deep into the innings.

The last wicket eventually fell at 276 in the 48th over, leaving Falkland winners by 51 runs.

Despite the defeat, there was plenty to take from Henley's performance. Bowling Falkland out after they had appeared capable of posting an even larger total showed considerable resilience, while the partnership between Brock and Tunnadine demonstrated that Henley were prepared to take on a daunting chase rather than simply settle for batting points.

Brock's outstanding 88 and Tunnadine's 61 were the highlights with the bat, while Seward and Donovan each claimed three wickets, Donovan's hat-trick providing the memorable moment of the afternoon.

Henley also emerged with ten league points after securing the maximum five batting and five bowling bonus points from a high-scoring contest.
