Commentary
Many people have commented on the decline in Sunday cricket in clubs all around the country. However this was not apparent when Henley Sunday XI played an excellent and competitive match against nomadic side Kensington.
The toss was lost and Henley found themselves in the field. The opening bowlers found early bounce and movement but excellent batting enabled Kensington to reach 107 for 1 wicket after 20 overs.
The introduction of spinners Alex Johnson and Rob Kenworthy removed both batsmen and put a stranglehold on the Kensington innings. Saeed Esrar and Nick Johnson then returned to the attack and, helped by keen fielding, two stumpings from Phil Chappell and a fantastic return catch for Esrar, claimed five wickets between them as the Kensington innings descended to 185 all out.
Henley lost early wickets as the Kensington pacemen also found life in the Henley pitch and suddenly 185 seemed a long way away. A brilliant captain’s innings from Marc Ayres and determined batting from Jeremy Palmer put Henley in touching distance of victory before a flurry of wickets put the game back in the balance.
As gloom descended on the ground Henley needed 6 to win with 2 overs to go and only 2 wickets left. Nick Johnson and Rob Kenworthy stayed cool however and the winning runs eventually came when the ball eluded the Kensington keeper and struck his helmet lying on the ground behind him. This cost the fielding side 5 penalty runs and brought an unusual end to a close-fought and entertaining match.

Commentary
After a complete wash-out the on Saturday Henley Sunday XI were not only determined to play some cricket but also maintain their good form against Young Lions CC, a very keen side from North London.
Skipper Marc Ayres won the toss and decided to bat first and openers Chris Ellison and Stewart Davison started patiently playing each ball on its merits until Ellison was caught spectacularly after flashing at a wide ball from Rajid. Euan Brock joined Davison at the crease and these two added almost 100 to the score before Davison was bowled. Brock however passed his fifty and looked certain to score a century until he was run out on 97, the second time he’d been dismissed for that score this season. Richard Bradbury and Nick Johnson then took over and their unbroken partnership of 60 at over a run a ball brought up a total of 234 for Henley
Initially the Young Lions struggled to get above the run rate thanks to accurate pace bowling from Saeed Esrar and Dan Poulson and the introduction of spinners Alex Johnson and Rob Kenworthy made batting seem even more difficult as they picked up a wicket apiece. The Young Lions middle order battled on however and it became an interesting game once Justin arrived at the crease hitting 4 consecutive sixes, including a sublime lofted drive over extra cover.
Left-arm spinners Brock and Ellison bowled tightly and wickets fell regularly in the final run chase with the Young Lions being eventually bowled out just 26 runs short of the Henley total in an entertaining game of Sunday cricket that was played in an excellent spirit throughout.
