Commentary
A young and inexperienced Henley 4th X1 took on second placed Slough 4th X1 in Thames Valley League Div 7a at Stonor on Saturday.
Henley elected to bat first on a wicket that was still slow after a month of indifferent weather and found runs hard to come by. Tom Chappell and Max Miles-Thomas launched the innings with a partnership of 40 in the first 20 overs but a flurry of wickets followed their dismissals leaving Henley in trouble at 70 for 6. A solid innings from Tom Bishop led a recovery and, in mini-partnerships with Joe Matthews, Alex Johnson and Phil Chappell, took the score to the comparative respectability of 131 for 9 after 52 overs.
This total looked lightweight against probably the strongest batting side in this league but Henley retained the old ball and Chris Johnson embarked on a 21 over spell in which he took 4 wickets for just 37 runs. Accurate seam bowling from John Neville and sharp spin from Tom Chappell also caused problems for Slough but in the end, sensible batting enabled them to reach their target with 6 overs remaining.

Commentary
Heavy rain on Saturday morning delayed the start of Henley 4th X1’s match against Hurst 2nd X1 who won the toss and put Henley in to bat on a very wet wicket.
Initially Tom Chappell and Nick Johnson made batting look simple as they put on 40 for the first wicket but then both were run out in circumstances that most under 9’s teams would have been ashamed of and batting never looked so easy thereafter. James Knight grafted his way to a fine 39 not out but on a pitch that was drying rapidly in the hot sun no other batsman looked comfortable as Henley struggled to a total of 134 for 8.
Hurst found batting equally difficult and were soon in trouble against the accuracy of Mark Thomas and Nick Johnson and there was no let up when they were replaced by Sean Taylor and Chris Johnson. The spin of Sam Ranger and Alex Johnson teased out the Hurst middle order but then a late flurry of runs put them back in contention for an unlikely victory. Eventually, however the Hurst number 11 skied the ball into the safe hands of Sam Ranger securing a Henley victory by just 17 runs.

A poor performance saw Henley 4th X1 lose again in Thames Valley League Div 7a against Thatcham 3rd X1.
After winning the toss Henley unusually fielded first on a wet wicket that was certain to be difficult to bat on. Unfortunately the Henley bowlers were poorly supported by their fielders who, in dropping seven catches, allowed Thatcham to reach 206 for 5 after 52 overs.
This was always going to be a hard total to reach on such a slow pitch and careless shots from the early batsmen did little to help Henley’s cause. James Knight and Will Allum batted carefully for 20 overs but by then Henley were considerably behind the run rate. Hard hitting from Nathan Hopkins, Liam Dennison and Alex Johnson boosted the Henley total but wickets kept tumbling and in the end they subsided to 173 all out.
The previous week the 4ths had also played poorly and lost to bottom of the league Odiham and Greywell 2nd XI.
Batting first, Henley failed to master a drying wicket and, apart from a steady innings from Mark Thomas and late order aggression from Alex Johnson and Tom Bishop, looked incapable of scoring a competitive total as they slumped to 119 all out.
Will Allum bowled superbly in reply to take 5 for 13 off 10 overs but no other bowler looked threatening as Odiham knocked off the runs in just 32 overs.

Commentary
Once again Henley 4th X1 were lucky to escape with a draw in Thames Valley League Div 7a after a below average performance against Theale and Tilehurst 2nd X1.
Theale and Tilehurst batted first on a hard, fast wicket at Turville and although they initially struggled for runs they eventually totalled 236 for 5 with Will Allum and Nick Johnson being the pick of the bowlers in an attack that struggled for accuracy in windy conditions.
These runs should have been well within Henley’s capability on a high scoring ground but they made a poor start with the loss of three quick wickets before James Knight and Will Allum made amends with a carefully compiled 50 partnership. But after their dismissals wickets fell regularly and at 139 for 9 with 10 overs still remaining they looked likely to be defeated.
Not for the first time this season Phil (Stonewall) Chappell proved to be an immovable object however and in company with a more belligerent Chris Johnson not only saw out the remaining overs but took the score to the relative respectability of 176 for 9 by the close.

Commentary
After two rather indifferent batting displays Henley 4th X1 were due to score some runs and they came in abundance in an exciting high scoring draw away against Slough 4th X1.
Batting first on a hard, fast wicket Tom Chappell completed a maiden century sharing partnerships of 96 with Mark Thomas and 148 with James Knight who ended on 80 not out. A flurry of runs from Will Allum rounded off an excellent performance allowing a declaration on 272 for 3 after 50 overs.
After tea Slough found runs equally easy to come by and at 120 for 1 off only 15 overs looked likely to overhaul Henley’s total with ease but when the spin of Tom Chappell removed Ray Ibrahim and Amerjot Singh bowled the prolific Mohammed Thanjan the game was wide open again.
Slough continued to chase down the Henley total however and despite accurate overs from John Neville and Alex Johnson eventually needed just 40 off their last 5 overs with 4 wickets remaining. But in the end the pace of Will Allum and experience of Chris Johnson applied enough pressure on the Slough tail for wickets to tumble and they finished just 16 runs short and Henley just one wicket away from what would have been a memorable victory for either side.

Commentary
Henley 4th X1 were well beaten on Saturday by Finchampstead 4th X1 in Thames Valley League Div 7a.
Put into bat on a rain affected wicket Henley struggled from the outset and at 38 for 5 looked in deep trouble. Dogged defence from Will Allum and Chris Johnson retrieved the situation however and the tailenders hung around long enough for Allum to complete a fine half-century and record a total of 145 off 50 overs.
Two early wickets from Chris Johnson suggested that this total might not be easy for Finchampstead to pass but any such notion was quickly quashed by Pask and Davey who knocked off the remaining runs without difficulty in just 27 overs.
Despite being defeated for the first time in nearly two years this was a creditable performance by an unusually inexperienced Henley team who batted, bowled and fielded with great spirit throughout and who remain in second place in their league.

Commentary
Henley 4th X1 gave a disappointing performance in their top of the table clash with Windsor 4th X1 in Thames Valley League Div 7a and were lucky to escape with a draw.
Unsurprisingly Windsor chose to bat first on a wicket that looked as if it would be slow and whilst they struggled against the nagging accuracy of Chris Johnson, runs flowed freely against the quicker bowlers at the other end. Eventually Henley elected for spin from both ends and this paid dividends as Tom Chappell once again took wickets but Windsor still accumulated a total of just over 200 despite Johnson bowling 26 overs from one end for just 53 runs.
Mediocre bowling and fielding from Henley then led to disastrous batting as they lost both openers within the first 7 balls before descending to 18 for 5 through some bad luck but also a succession of very poor shots. The long reach of Nick Johnson’s forward defensive stopped the rot and 20 overs of stonewalling from Phil Chappell set up a tense finish in which Chris and Alex Johnson blocked out the remaining overs to deny Windsor the 25 points that they undeniably deserved.
Tomorrow Henley 4ths play third-placed Finchamstead 4ths at Harpsden and will have to improve on this performance if they wish to remain amongst the front runners in this division.

Commentary
Local derby’s between Henley and Kidmore End are invariably tense affairs and so it proved once again when Henley 4th X1 met Kidmore End 3rd X1 in Thames Valley League Div 7a.
Winning the toss Kidmore elected to bat and looked on target for a big score with positive contributions from all their top order batsmen before a mix-up between captain Paul Lawson and Chris Dindar resulted in Lawson being run out. Thereafter runs proved harder to come by against tight seam bowling from Mark Thomas and the spin of Tom Chappell and Alex Johnson and they were eventually bowled out for 197.
In reply Henley lost early wickets to Ishry and Andrew Johnson before a 50 partnership between Marc Ayres and Nathan Hopkins put them back on course to win the game. Another flurry of wickets followed however and when Ayres departed for a fine 72 they were back in trouble at 148 for 7.
But plenty of overs were still in hand and Max Miles-Thomas and Sean Taylor mixed resolute defence with intelligent running between the wickets as they calmly accumulated the remaining runs without further alarm to round off an excellent game of cricket.
This gives to gain Henley a fourth league win so far this season, leaving them in second place to Windsor 4ths who they meet next Saturday.

Henley 4th X1 batted first once again away against Hurst 2nd X1 on a wicket that was still damp from rain earlier in the week.
Unsurprisingly, batting proved difficult and only James Knight looked comfortable against determined bowling and keen fielding from a young Hurst side. He shared a 50 partnership with John Neville, eventually scored a very fine 82 and hoisted the score to 174 all out helped by aggressive hitting from the lower order.
In reply Hurst started positively and at 55 for 1 off only 13 overs looked well placed to win the match. However miserly bowling from Chris Johnson and Will Allum, who only conceded 1 run in 7 overs, pushed their scoring rate back below the required run rate.
The introduction of Tom Chappell to the attack then changed the game completely. In a mesmerising spell of leg-spin bowling he took 4 wickets in quick succession, 3 of them in one over, which left Hurst hanging on to secure a draw. Despite attacking fields and several bowling changes Henley were unable to prise out the remaining batsmen and eventually had to settle for a moral victory and just 9 points.

Commentary
Henley 4th X1 confidently went out to bat against Eversley 3rd X1 on a windy Saturday at Stonor having taken maximum points from their first two league matches this season.
This time they suffered a shaky start with the early loss of both openers but resolute batting from Mark Thomas and James Knight began to repair the damage. This was followed by a mature innings from 13 year old Will Allum who, with help from the lower order, grafted the total towards an adequate 195 on a wicket that assisted the bowlers more than expected.
Retaining the old ball after tea proved successful for Henley as the spin and swing combination of Chris Johnson and John Neville reduced Eversley to 19 for 3 off the first few overs but then the opposition recovered to 110 for 5 with a possible chance of victory.
However, after 26 overs the new ball was eventually taken and Mark Thomas completed a fine all round performance with 3 for 15 as Henley’s seam attack quickly removed the remaining batsmen. This left Eversley 57 runs short and earned a further maximum 25 points for the 4ths.

Henley Fourth XI v Thatcham 3rd X1 – TVL Division 7a
17th May 2008
On a cold, damp afternoon at Stonor on Saturday Henley 4th X1 collected another maximum 25 points against Thatcham 3rd X1 in Thames Valley League Div 7a.
Despite the rain affected wicket Henley elected to bat first after winning the toss. Once again the opening pairing of Tom Chappell and Nick Johnson launched the innings with a 50 partnership and this was followed by a really fine century stand between Mark Thomas (52) and James Knight (38) before Henley declared at 203 for 4 after 49 overs.
Further rain, just after the interval, did Henley no favours with an even wetter ball to bowl with but smart slip catching gave Jack Harris two wickets in an over and this set the tone for the innings. Wickets fell at regular intervals against a Thatcham side that only sporadically seemed to show much interest in trying to win the game but all the bowlers stuck to their task well in the miserable conditions. More excellent catches were taken, notably by Mick Woolhouse at short leg and by Tom Chappell at second slip which sealed victory by exactly 100 runs for Henley.
