Henley 3 vs Odiham and Greywell - 5th June 2010
Henley 3rd XI arrived at Turville Heath for this ‘home’ fixture against Oliham & Greywell with the hope put aside last week’s draw against Reading and get back to winning ways.
The Henley Skipper won the toss and elected to field first opening the bowling with himself and the experienced Jason Withers. This proved an expensive venture as 40 runs were taken from the first 6 overs by openers Heyward and Bowa. A change of ends by the opening bowlers had the effect of lowering the run rate and the taking of the first wicket as Liam Dennison bowled Heyward with a fine yorker for 17. Hodgson then came to the wicket to join Bowa who continued to play some fine shots to the loose balls.
At this juncture the off-spin of Rob Kenworthy and medium pace of Jeremy Palmer were brought onto the attack to try to obtain a break through. Palmer duly obliged induced Bowa to play too early and loft a shot to Tom Oldershaw at mid off off his 5th ball for 39. Hodgeson befell a similar fate in Palmer’s next over, this time caught by Kenworthy at cover for 9. The left handed number 4 batsman, Rowe-Jones then lobbed a simple catch to Nick ‘Bambi’ Johnson in the gully to give Palmer his 3rd wicket without conceding a run. Kenworthy then put sufficient pressure on their umpire for him to give Hall out lbw for 7. At 5 down with only 106 on the board things were looking comfortable for Henley, but as Palmer began to tire, the spin of Ron Pratley and Prakash Gurung was introduced. A partnership developed between Turner and Rowe who took advantage of the short bowling from the spinners and the returning Dennison.
With the score on 192, Palmer was re-introduced, and bowling the worst ball of the day, Rowe obligingly smashed Palmer’s first ball straight to Gurung at cover. In the medium pacer’s next over Peacock skied a catch to Oldershaw at mid off, who narrowly avoided a collision with Johnson, and 2 balls later enticed Odiham’s top scorer Turner to give a catch to Kenworthy at square leg for 69. Kenworthy then rounded the innings off by tempting two of the tailenders to give gentle catches to Gurung and Oldershaw. Odiham were bowled out for 195 in 47 overs with Palmer taking 6 wickets for just 11 runs, ably supported by Kenworthy with 3 for 51.
Having 53 overs in which to complete the task, Henley were confident of overhauling the required total, and with a good brisk start from Johnson and Oldershaw the situation looked better. With the score on 33, serenity then turned to mild panic as first Johnson, trying to repeat an expansive pull shot, Oldershaw, yorked, Garung, lbw, and Bugg, incorrectly given out caught down the leg side, all fell within the space of 4 overs. Things then went from bad to worse, when the recently prolific Kendrick was then adjudged to be lbw for 1. At 57 for 5 the target of 196 was looking a very long way off.
Palmer then joined 15 year old Ben Francis to bring some calmness to the situation by denying the opposition any further breakthroughs for the next 20 overs, through which they survived a heavy rain shower, but Palmer’s car did not forgetting to put the roof up on his car. Francis’s mature innings came to an end when he chipped the ball to mid off for a well compiled 27 having put on 40 with Palmer. Jason Withers then entered the battle to be greeted by the Odiham fast bowlers trying to remove his hat with the ball. Having been brought up on the pacey wickets of Western Australia, he was quick to despatch any bouncers to the boundary with great skill. With the re-introduction of Odiham’s strike bowler P Thomas came Palmer’s downfall, caught at slip for a very patient 33. Dennison soon followed playing across the line and being bowled for 8. Ron Pratley entered the fray with still 60 required with 10 overs left and, with Withers, stroked the ball to all parts maintaining the run rate. Alas, after a partnership of 40, Withers fell to a despicable piece of umpiring lbw for 29. Last man Kenworthy hit a couple of lusty blows but unfortunately a mix up over a quick single meant the the end of the match with Pratley run out for 23.

Henley 3 vs Eversley 2 - 22nd May 2010
On a blistering hot summers day, Henley 3's entertained an Eversley 2's at the picturesque ground in Stoner.
Having won the toss, Eversley captain, Whelan, opted to field first, much to the delight of the home team.
Henley got things under way in fine fashion as (N) Johnson pulled Whelan for an almight six. The openers continued to prod around and provided a stable platform from which the team could build on. It was the introduction of Hammond and Jenkins that was to remain the Eversley bowling attack for the afternoon. Hammond struck in just his second over, as he bowled Bugg. (N) Johnson, is typical, frustrating fashion, through away his wicket when he holed out to deep mid-on, this time on 49. Gurung and Dennison, trying to consolidate for the loss of the openers hung around for a bit, until the latter was bowled by Hammond, and Kendrick was dismissed for first ball. With the wicket of Gould, Hammond claimed his 5th wicket, which was shortly followed by Gurung when he was trapped LBW. Henley, having been 147-2, now found themselves at 157-6. Jason Withers, used his experience and desperately tried to hold an end, but with regular wickets still dropping, Henley were only able to scrape to 191 all out. With four ducks, Henley felt they had posted a modest total.
Attempting to defend 191, Henley took to the field with the old ball, that was still in very good condition. It was the early introduction of (N) Johnson that saw Henley get the early scalp that they had hoped for, as Ford was bowled for just 5. Johnson (3-17) then claimed two further wickets of Hammond and Jenkins as Eversley slipped to 28 for 3. With the in-form David and Smith at the crease, the visitors looked to consolidate and eat up a few overs. The introduction of Gould saw the end of Smith as he end behind to Davison. Now with Collen to partner him, David continued to defend the good ball and put away the bad ball, as the pair scored a 40 partnership off 18 overs. It was the introduction of Dennison (5-10) that broke the partnership and ended the innings of David who had lasted 32 overs for his 44.With accurate bowling, decent swing and extra bounce out of the Stoner wicket, Dennison and the Henley teamripped through the bottom order as Eversley were bowled out for 120.
A fantastic team effort, sharp fielding and accurate bowling saw Henley overcome and Eversley side that were in the same division and Henley 2's, just three years ago. With 25 points in the bag, Henley maintained their 100% start to the season and maintain top position in division 4 of the Thames Valley League.

Cove 3 vs Henley 3 - 15th May 2010
After missing out on the title to Cove on the last game of the season, when both sides last met, Henley were determined to make amends against the Division 5 Champions.
Despite a wayward spell from the skipper from one end, Simon Wheeler kept things tight at the other end and within just the 4th over of the game, struck with the wicket of Gudge. Withers, making his debut for the team, bowled well as he took the wicket of Collins for just 1 and with the introduction of Palmer, who seems to enjoy the wicket at Cove, the home side were facing adversity as the vice captain claimed 4 wickets for just 27 runs. With another couple of wickets for Garung and Cove at 122 for 8, Henley were cruising! However, with a mixture of aggressive batting and some very good fortune, a 9th wicket stand of 98 saw Cove post more than a competitive total as they finish 221-9.
Henley, sticking with the same top three that saw them triumph against Thatcham last week, started brightly. Johnson playing some well timed shots and Robinson playing a patient innings, the Henley openers created a great platform with a stand of 78. After Johnson pushed one straight to covers, Garung edged behind and Robinson was trapped LBW within 5 overs, the tie was back in the home sides favour. A 50 run partnership between Bugg and Palmer steadied the visitors until Farmiloe and Burns both struck to leave Henley 145 for 5. With the in-form Kendrick battling hard to steady the ship, Henley started to slip behind the run rate, needing over a run an over. However, with able support from Gould and Dennison, Kendrick started to free his arms as he dispatched the Cove spin attack to all parts of the ground. With a nervous finish on the cards and the sun disappearing behind the trees, it was left to Withers to strike an almighty six that saw Henley past the finishing post with 8 balls to spare.
With the win, Henley take 20 points and move them to the top of the table early on in the season. Next week see's them host a strong Eversley 2's at Stoner Cricket Club.

Henley 3 vs Thatcham 2 - 8th May 2010
Henley 3rd XI began their 2010 campaign with a comprehensive victory at ‘home’ at over Thatcham Town who failed to cope with both conditions and Nick Johnson.
Upon arrival at a freezing cold Stoke Row for this fixture a green wicket was found that was predicted to create a low scoring encounter. When Henley Captain Liam Dennison loss the toss and was asked to bat he sent Nick Johnson and Neil Robinson to test their skills on the awkward pitch. Johnson started with some pleasing strokes through the off side whilst Robinson defended his wicket resolutely at the other end. As the score passed 50, and warming cups of tea were duly brewed for those spectating, Johnson was narrowly run out for 35 attempting a second run. Number three Prakash Garung then experienced one of the demons in the pitch as he gloved a ball from opening bowler Tim Mahoney behind. The experienced Tim Kendrick then entered the fray and bided his time for a few overs attempted to acclimatise to conditions. Just as he began to open his shoulders with a couple of characteristic lusty blows, his innings was cut short by a ball that kept low from Squire. No praise was too great for the patient Robinson who showed great fortitude in coping with the conditions and held the innings together. He was joined by Jeremy Palmer whose role was to eliminate any further Thatcham breakthroughs and attempt to push the score along. This pair patiently pushed the score past the hundred mark, in the 35th over, before Robinson hit his first boundary and this was the catalyst for the run rate to increase. The pair took a particular liking for the Thatcham leg spinner as he was milked nicely for two overs before he was removed from the attack. Left armer Wylie lived up to his name with sustained accurate bowling that accounted for Robinson for 46, just as he was looking to take the bowling apart, and Skipper Dennison for 10. Sean Taylor joined Palmer as they entered the last 5 overs of the innings looking for quick runs before Palmer was bowled by Wylie for 41. Taylor, Simon Wheeler and Rob Kenworthy continued the trend with some entertaining running to get the Henley total up to 190 for 7. Once Thatcham had defrosted themselves they set about overhauling the Henley total which was always going to be a struggle. The skipper opened the bowling with the Johnson brothers and it was Johnson Jnr Jnr (Alex) who struck first enticing Cottingham to square cut a catch to Palmer at backward point for 5. It was then that Johnson Snr Jnr (Nick), clad in long johns, who destroyed Thatcham taking 8 wickets for 33. Snr Jnr’s first victim was Fraser who was smartly taken by Robinson in the gully from a lifting ball, then after a change of ends, he tempted Denness to drive the ball to Palmer at mid off. This procession continued unabated with two catches by the junior Johnson, a smart one from the keeper Eric Davison standing up, and another from Robinson. The finest catches of the day were taken by Sean Taylor who was tested by two high swirling efforts that he snaffled like a pro. After Johnson Snr Jnr was removed from the bowling attack after taking his eighth wicket, and with Thatcham 9 wickets down, it was believed that that would be the end of his game, but no as he took a fine diving catch at cover off Garung’s first ball.
