| v Reading 3s 16 Aug 08
|
Henley 2nd XI recorded yet another impressive win over a much changed Reading 3rd XI thanks to a classy innings of 78 not out by Steve Horne and a good all round bowling performance.
Reading started positively against the attacking bowling of Andy White and Tim Chamberlain on a fantastic batting pitch. However, White soon dismissed both openers and along with Chamberlain tied the other opposition batsmen down. McGeer offered some resistance and although not ever looking fluent against change bowlers Yandell, Mitchell and Brock he was the only constant as batsmen after batsmen was dismissed due to a mixture of poor shot selection and good bowling.Hilditch in the slips took a great diving catch to dismiss Beavan and then another good one to get rid of Singh. McGeer then fell to the rather obvious trap at long on as Davison encouraged him to hit Brock out of the ground. Instead he put it down Ben Mitchell's throat who took a good catch on the edge. The lower order finally knuckled down and led by skipper Nasim they batted patiently in the face of tight bowling, using up overs and frustrating the league leaders. Berryman struggled to find the gaps and eventually lost his patience andhis off poletrying to put a good length straight ball from Andy White (ina surprise 2nd spell for the veteran all rounder)into Twyford. Reading were finally bowled out for 140 in the final over, a comical run out signalling the end of their innings. Andy White not for the first time in his career was the pick of the Henley attack, finishing with 4 wickets.
Henley's innings started well. Although Horne and Hilditch accumulated cautiously against the accuracy of Wilkins who finished with excellent figures of 6 overs for 9 runs, they soon accelerated, both striking the ball well and running well between the wickets. With Henley fully in control of the game Hilditch was adjudged LBW for an otherwise chanceless 40; he's looking good just in time for the end of the season! This brought Brock to the crease who, after a sublime cover drive for 4, was unfortunately back in the pavillion moments later again LBW but he could have walked, so plumb was he. Darren White completed the easy victory for the home side with 8 off 2; Henley running out easy winners in just20.2 overs. The Reading change bowlers kept trying the middle of the pitch and Steve Horne responded by pulling hard into the allotments and Remenham Lane. He finished unbeaten for a classy 78 which included four sixes. Henley, are 61 points ahead of 3rd placeRoyal Ascot who are in the unlikely position of being able to overhaul us but a win this Saturday will seal an excellent season for us. Victory the following week againts Eversley will see us crowned Champions of Div 3B, a fitting reward for the way we have played this year.
