| v Stoke Green 2 Aug 08
|
Henley 2nd XI completed their eleventh win of the season by comprehensively beating Stoke Green thanks to another five wicket haul from Tim
Chamberlain.
Stoke Green, who went into the clash with the in-form league leaders in last place were in desperate need for points. Visiting skipper McMullum voiced concerns over the state of the square after the low cloud and persistent rain which dogged much of the South East on Saturday had cleared. However, thanks to hard work around the ground and the appearance of the sun, a delayed start was made possible. However, the time lost restricted the match to 74 overs, with the side batting first able to take up 39 of them.
Henley began well after Smith won the toss and, not surprisingly, elected to bowl. Once he had loosened up, Chamberlain set about terrorising the opposition batsmen with a terrific spell of accurate fast bowling. In the fifth over he accounted for opener Bourne with a rising delivery which took the shoulder of the bat and flew to slip and Younis, who was comprehensively bowled, in consecutive deliveries. Ifraz, the Stoke Green talisman came out swinging despite Chamberlain taking a further two wickets in 3 balls, and made an entertaining and enterprising 36 before Andy White got him to play round an away-swinging Yorker and bowled him. At the pavilion end Andy White continued to apply pressure, his ten over spell costing just 19 runs and after the dismissal of Ifraz the floodgates opened with 3 wickets in 3 overs, Chamberlain completing his second five-for this season. Spells from Mitchell and Hancock finished off any resistance from the visitors, the latter picking up 2 wickets while the big Australian was unlucky to have a couple of good LBW shouts turned down. Stoke Green finished on 82, massively below par on another excellent Henley deck and quick outfield, mainly as a result of tight bowling and excellent ground fielding from the home team.
Henley started positively, Hilditch making a run a ball 22 before edging a good ball leg cutter from Ifraz-the pick of the Stoke Green bowlers. The home side rung the changes in the batting order and with the dismissal of Hilditch, Davison was joined by Bugg. Both batsmen played carefully at first but a flurry of boundaries came quickly towards the end, and they both finished unbeaten as Henley cruised home, one wicket down, in under 20 overs.
Another good performance from Henley means they lead the league by 29 points with just five games left, the 2nd XI are away at promotion chasing Marlow Park next Saturday.
Henley won the toss and elected to field.

| v Thatcham 19 July Away
|
Another excellent performance in the field set up a convincing win for Henley 2s to maintain their unbeaten season after 11 games in TVCL Division 3B.
Thatcham won the toss and, in a bid for points, elected to bat on a pitch that looked like it might offer some assistance to the bowlers. For Henley, Denning and Chamberlain shared the new ball and both immediately looked too good for the home team bastmen. And it was not long before the wickets started to fall; Chamberlain inducing an edge from opener Lynch in the fourth over with the score on 13. In the next over Denning proved his class taking out Lynch's off stump with an excellent outswinging delivery. Bartholomew had come in at 3 and likeseveral of the Thatcham batsmen decided that attack was probably the best form of defence-he and number 4 Edgecombe were right for a while but eventually extravagent driving and attempted driving of accurate bowling by Denning was to be their undoing both being bowled. Skipper Fraser steadied the ship for a while with a gritty 13 but Yandell got one to turn and bounce and Brock pouched the chance at short leg. The loss of the skipper seemed to knock the fight out of the home side and when Andy White took 2 wickets in one over their innings was in trouble at 64-8. A brief but entertaing cameo from Edge moved the score along to 82 before he was well caught by the evergreen Hilditch. The innings was wrapped up 2 balls later when Stu Davison rounded off another excellent performance behind the stumps bydismissing Mahoney, stumped off the bowling of Yandell. All the bowlers contributed to the Thatcham downfall with the hostile Denning (4-26) and wily Yandell (3-11) bowling especially well.
In a slight change to the order Mick Hilditch was sent in to open with Chris Ellison and the pair started carefully, getting the measure of the pitch before moving up a gear. Both openers played fluently punishing the bad ball severely; and with the 6th over being hit for 15 it looked like Henley would record their first 10 wicket win of the season. However, Thatcham proved they had characterwith left armers Waterston and Williams bowling particularly well on the uneven surface. It was Williams who took their only wicket, inducing Hilditch to change his mind mid shot resulting in a gentle catch to silly mid off. This only stalled the inevitable, however, and ChrisEllison aided by young talent Euan Brock took Henley over the line after just 19.1 overs.
This was another all-round, excellent team performance by the Henley side. It takes them another game closer to promotion and, more importantly, maintains their push to be promoted as winners of Division 3B and meant they were back for the excellent Summer Ball (thanks David and Danny and team)

| v Teddington Town 12 July
|
An excellent all round performance meant Henley 2s completed a convincing double over Teddington Town this Saturday to maintain their 15 point lead at the top of Thames Valley division 3B.
On winning the toss skipper Smith had no hesitation in asking the visitors to bat first on a pitch that had a little moisture in the surface and looked like it might help the seamers early on. So it proved, Andy White and Nick Denning bowling with good pace and movement made scoring difficult, the Teddington batsmen getting away with several false strokes. Eventually White produced his rare off cutter to have the dangerous Watchorn caught behind by Davison-the first of his 4 victims behind the stumps in the game. Denning then produced a beauty to castle Mitchell and then soon after one that was too quick for Patel who was stone dead lbw for a duck. When Denning then got one to bounce and seam to Tamblinson who edged it behind; the visitors were in trouble at 58-5. Skipper Simmons proved to be more difficult to dislodge but he eventually lost the battle with Denning for 41. Dardegan once again batted well, striking the ball hard for his 25 and, with the rest of the tail chipping in Teddington eventually reached a below par 141, Mitchell and Hancock bowling accurately with menace to finish the innings.
In reply Henley never looked in danger of falling short of the Teddington total with Roberts and Harrison starting strongly. Unfortunately when going well Harrison guided a long hop, which he would normally have steered to the boundary with ease, to gully. This brought Andy White to the crease and he looked his usual fluent self despatching the bad ball to the boundary until he was deceived by a good delivery from Dardegan, bowled for 16. With the score meandering along at 59-2 from 20 overs Roberts suddenly found some fluency and confidence and with Brock looking solid at the other end he started to find the boundary with regularity; his 81 not out including 3 maximums and 10 fours. This new found urgency saw the final 86 runs scored in 14.2 overs at a much better rate capping off another excellent win for the home side-still unbeaten after 10 weeks of the league season.

| v Chenies and Latimer 5 July
|
Despite being on top for the majority of the game, thanks, in particular, to a magnificent 100 not out from the in-form Andrew White, Henley 2nd XI could not quite take the last 2 wickets to force a win against bottom placed Chenies and Latimer. Henley lost the toss and curiously were put in by a team struggling for points. Once again Horne and Harrison got the home side off to a good start putting on 54 before Horne was unlucky to be adjudged LBW for a solid 24. Unfortunately Harrison soon followed his opening partner back to the pavilion, bowled by a good Yorker when looking well set. Andrew White was meantime playing himself in on a pitch that looked good but had some variable bounce taking 22 balls to reach double figures. He watched Smith fall LBW and then started to put together a steadying partnership of 60 with brother Darren who was out caught behind following a wide one when he also looked set for a big score. Variable bounce caused Hilditch to play on and with the score on 146 Brock came to the wicket to partner White. This was the cue for an increase in the scoring rate; these two putting the visiting bowlers to the sword for a superb partnership of 82 in just over 30 minutes. White was particularly aggressive, clearing the rope for 3 maximums that should keep the local roofing contractors happy but, as they tried to further increase the rate, Brock was caught behind for an excellent 33 in 27 balls. White marshalled the innings perfectly, reaching his century and enabling Henley to declare in the 48th over which gave them a good chance of bowling the visitors out. Unfortunately this was to prove more difficult than expected as Chenies were determined not to lose even if they were not able to win and the opening pair set the tone taking 170 balls to score 73 runs between them. The breakthrough came when skipper Taylor reached a little too far playing a forward defensive and retired hurt. This opened the gates a little for the Henley bowlers and wickets started to tumble, only Norwood providing any real resistance during his determined 47 from 82 deliveries. Once again Yandell took a wicket in his first over and spin twin Brock claimed the dangerous Coetzee; a smart catch by Horne at silly mid off. Wickets continued to fall, Darren White again rewarded for good seam bowling and Henley sensed a victory with the visitors 112 for 8. However, it was not to be, despite Smith trying every combination of bowler and Brown never looking completely safe during his stay at the crease, he survived to the end with the returning Taylor and runner holding up the other end. Henley are still 15 points clear at the top of TVCL 3b, and will be looking to complete a double over visitors Teddington Town at the Brakspear Ground Saturday. | v Eversley 28 June 08
|
Henley 2nd XI beat Eversley in a top of a table clash to cement their place on top of Division 3B thanks to fine displays of determined batting from Tom Bugg and Euan Brock.
Henley won the toss and elected to field against the second place side on a firm but grassy wicket. Henley started well with A. White picking up two wickets in two balls and Chamberlain threatening. However, with the arrival of Dixon and Jones Eversley began to accumulate runs steadily. Henley were therefore thankful for the latter's run out, James Yandell with a precise throw. Henley continued to bowl accurately but made little headway against the classy Dixon who was well supported by the middle order. However, a crucial run out as a result of excellent work from Horne in the deep meant an end to Last and with sustained pressure from Yandell and Darren White the home side struggled to accelerate. Brock continued where Yandell left off and despite useful knocks from Pigden and Caruana a total of 218-9 was probably slightly under-par on a small pitch with fast outfield.
Henley played positively with Horne striking a quick 19 before being trapped LBW. However, the league leaders were soon in trouble as Harrison, Andrew White and Smith were all back in the pavilion at 40 for 4. Bugg and Darren White applied themselves well before White was unlucky to play on to the bowling of Jones for 20. As Brock made his way to the middle for his league debut with the bat and the score at 77-5 the pressure was well and truly on but a terrific, intelligently compiled partnership of 104 with Bugg put the visitors in charge of the game. Both batsmen were able to work the ball into the gaps and punish the bad ball. Bugg's dismissal for an excellent 65 brought Davison to the crease and aggressive running between the wickets combined with fine strokes from Brock meant the remaining 38 runs took just 22 deliveries to acquire.
The win leaves Henley 21 points clear at the top of TVCL 3b, they host strugglers Chenies and Latimer at Shiplake College on Saturday.

| v Royal Ascot 21 Jun 08
|
Leaders Henley 2nd XI continued their excellent start to the season last weekend, running out comfortable 8 wicket winners against a Royal Ascot side who started the day in 3rd place in Division 3b of the TVCL. Henley won the toss and put Ascot in on a good looking pitch and the decision paid off immediately, Davies caught Darren White, bowled Andrew White off the 2nd ball of the game. However, any thoughts of an early finish were banished when Khartade came to the wicket. The pick of the batsmen, he found the going much easier than any of his teamates; cutting and driving beautifully and never looking in trouble. He was not given much support though, Allaway ripping the heart out of the Ascot middle order with his left arm medium pace. The away side struggled to come to terms with his variation and the good catching of the Henley side; Allaway's catch off his own bowling especially noteworthy. Skipper Smith rung the bowling changes throughout the innings and was rewarded when 3 times a new bowler took a wicket in his first over. Harris defeated the excellent Khartade with a slower ball, Hancock bowled opener Wensley with an excellent leg cutter and Yandell accounted for the dogged May. Wickets were falling regularly and, although the Ascot tail tried to grind it out, they were eventually all out for a disappointing 114 which could have been a lot worse but for the 69 of Khartade. Henley set off positively in reply to Ascot's well below-par score, with Harrison again playing nicely; cutting and driving extremely well. Opening with Allaway he got the score to 70 before he played on to be bowled by Buxton for 29. Allaway continued to play aggressively, even managing to run well between the wickets with Andrew White who replaced Harrison. Then, just as he got to a chanceless 50, Allaway cramped up badly in calf and hamstring; the consensus being that he needs to focus a bit more on his fitness for 2nd XI cricket. Unfortunately despite trying to bravely soldier on with a runner, he was forced to retire undefeated for an excellent 55. Meanwhile Andrew White had got the scores level with a typically attractive innings of 27 before he walked past one from Romer and was stumped by a distance more usually seen at Royal Ascot races than Royal Ascot cricket, leaving Smith to nudge Henley home. For the second week in a row securing a well deserved 8 wicket victory; this time in just 24.4 overs.
Henley, now a confident unit working hard for each other, have got into the excellent habit of winning and will be looking to continue their excellent run against 2nd placed Eversley this weekend.

Henley 2nd XI beat Reading 3rd XI thanks to six wickets from Darren White and excellent half centuries from Nick Harrison and Andrew White. Henley initially struggled for wickets on a placid pitch after winning the toss and electing to bowl; Langley and Andrew White were unsuccessful against the opening batsmen Davidson and Dorrington-the pitch not suiting their pace. However, the introduction of Darren White and Yandell did bring a breakthrough, Davidson holing out to a recently placed long on for 31. White and Yandell bowled accurately unchanged for the remainder of the innings, bowling long spells of 18 and 21 overs respectively. Reading looked extremely well placed to post a large total at 108-1 and although progress had been slow the collapse that followed of 9 wickets for 40 runs was a testament to tight bowling and excellent ground fielding from Henley which included 2 direct-hit run outs and 5 catches. Darren White bowled superbly, barely ever straying from a good line and length whilst swinging the ball in both directions. He was eventually rewarded with figures of 18.2 overs, 6 for 52. Yandell meanwhile bowled with good flight and control and was unlucky not to pick up more than 2 wickets. Henley fielded well on a fast outfield. There were very few mistakes by the away side; the Reading batsmen eventually succumbing to the pressure being applied all out for a disappointing 148. Henley set out positively in their reply to the home side’s below-par score, with Hilditch and Harrison playing extremely well, the latter accelerating to an important 52 before being caught at mid off. Henley never looked in trouble and when Andrew White replaced Hilditch his superb 62 not out, which included 11 fours and one six, was enough to seal Reading’s fate; Henley running out deserved 8 wicket winners in just 30.4 overs.

| v Marlow Park 7 June 2008
|
Henley 2nd XI secured a winning draw against Marlow Park to remain top of division 3b thanks to a captain's innings of 80 by Smith, a timely 50 by Davison and a good display in the field.
Initially Henley struggled with both openers dismissed early on and runs were hard to come by against accurate bowling. Andrew White attempted to rebuild the innings, as did Allaway although neither gained much fluency and both were out to the medium pace of Ayres. As skipper Smith came to the crease Henley desperately needed some stability and it was provided, along with Robinson; the latter complementing the captain's aggressive style by rotating the strike.
Robinson was eventually dismissed for 25, an innings worth much more given the situation, allowing aggression from the lower order. When Davison joined Smith Henley were struggling at 115-6. Smith continued to play aggressively, taking Henley towards a challenging total and when he was dismissed for a vital 80 Henley could begin to accelerate. Yandell and Davison running hard and striking the ball well. Davison was eventually caught for an excellent 50 and Yandell scored a personal best 24 not out as Henley finished on, what at one stage seemed an unlikely 230-8.
The home side started well in the field; Andrew White rolling back the years and surprising Weston with a short ball which was well claimed in the slips by Roberts with the score still on 0. Marlow then set about rebuilding the innings and looked well placed to chase down the total with Khan and Hawkins both contributing. However, 4 wickets falling for 23 runs, including a double wicket maiden from Hancock-one of those an excellent legside catch by Davison standing up to ythe medium pacer, effectively signalled the end to Marlow's chance of winning. Henley then took charge of the match and bowled well with little luck, good spells by Yandell and Darren White troubling the batsmen. Chamberlain was reintroduced to the attack and continued his excellent start to the season, taking 3 wickets in 3 overs to leave Henley close to victory although despite an increasingly attacking field, disciplined batting from Ijaz meant a draw was the final result. Henley feeling that if they had won the toss and batted first that they would have won this game.

| v Stoke Green 31 May
|
Henley 2nd XI continued their unbeaten start to the season with a superb nine wicket win away at 3rd placed Stoke Green thanks to six wickets from James Yandell and a controlled batting display by Michael Roberts and Darren White.
Henley won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to field on a green, wet pitch that showed signs of the recent inclement weather. The home side started well however, and saw off the opening bowlers despite two extremely close shouts for LBW from Andrew White. It wasn't until the introduction of Yandell and Darren White that Henley began to make inroads into the batting line up, with the latter picking up both the openers in a superb spell of bowling, finishing with figures of 4 wickets for 10 runs from his 9 overs.
Yandell meanwhile bowled accurately and with the exception of the hard hitting McMullan the opposition batsmen had no answer to the off-spinner’s accuracy. Stoke Green finished on 87 all out. An excellent fielding display including good catching from Brock and Harrison was capped by the latter’s well taken slip catch to finish the innings.
Henley never looked troubled chasing the small target, Roberts producing a faultless display of batting to finish 42 not out whilst Darren White hit a quickfire 31. Andrew White ended 12 not out to cap a fantastic team performance which leaves the 2nd XI top of division 3b.

| v Hurst 24 May 08
|
Playing at home for the 2nd week in succession, Henley 2nd XI comfortably beat Hurst by six wickets to leave them top of division 3b, due in no small part to a secondfive wicket haul of the season from Tim Chamberlain. As usual the ground looked and played immaculately thanks to the hard work of Dick Keeble and team. After Chamberlain dismissed Hawiles for nought, Hurst began to rebuild their innings, with Knowles playing aggressively in an effort to exploit the attacking fields set by Henley. Hollingnorth meanwhile stuggled, looking troubled by the swing of Andrew White who was unlucky not to pick up any wickets. Chamberlain accounted for Knowles, exposing the weak middle order and leading to a succession of wickets for the fast bowler. The introduction of the spin of Hussain also benefited the home side; he picked up3for 40 runs. Hollingworth continued to ride his luck, fortunate that multiple mis-timed pull shots didn't go to hand and even more so surviving a huge appeal for caught behind off Chamberlain from an excellent take down the legside by Davison. Finally some resistance was provided from the lower order, Wrightly, at number 8 looking the most accomplished Hurst batsman, signalling the end of Chamberlain's excellent15 over spell to make way for Head only for the medium pacer to watch his two overs slogged to cow corner for 21. A freak run out saw the end of Hollingworth for 82 and with Hussain dismissing Wrightly, Chamberlain was reintroduced and completed his five wicket haulwith the hard hitting Gent caught at cover by Brock. Had he been able to bowl a straight one at Wiggins, who was often closer to the square leg umpire than the stumps, he would have added to his tally. Darren White came on and immediately finished the Hurst innings and although Henley were favourites to chase down the small total on a good pitch, they were disappointed to haveconceded 172 against a weak batting line up. Henley started positively against the spin of Gent, reaching 42 in the 11th over but were soon in trouble, Hussain caught as the result of an uncharacteristicwild shot and Davison LBW shouldering arms to a straight one, both wickets fallingin quick succession. The ship was steadied by solid innings' of 38 from Andrew White, a patient knock of 18 from skipper Smith and a characteristically well played 37 not out for Darren White.
This result means the 2s are top of Division 3bwith a perfect record of three wins from three.

| v Thatcham Town 17 May 08
|
Henley 2nd XI continued their unbeaten start to the season with a comfortable 108 run victory over Thatcham town 2nd XI thanks to a five wicket haul from Darren White and a well paced batting display.
Henley, fielding a similar side to that which beat Teddington town last week, started well with Azeem Hussain scoring a fluent 41, whilst Davison struggled against the accurate bowling of Mahoney. Once Hussain was dismissed with the score at 72, Smith joined Davison only for the captain to be bowled shortly afterwards while trying to accelerate. The platform set by the openers was then built upon with an important innings of 45 from A. White. Aggressive hitting from D. White (14), T. Bugg (15) and M. Hilditch (15) gave Henley a slightly below par score of 219-6 at the end of their 52 overs.
Thatcham immediately looked ill at ease against A. White and Chamberlain, the latter's spell curtailed by injury. The gloom descended on the ground but D. White provided a bright spot with his fully deserved five wicket haul, whilst Hussain continued his great start to the season with the ball picking up 3 wickets in a spell of 8.3 overs for 6 runs. Thatcham were only able to get to 111 despite some good hitting by Masters, Henley running out easy winners in the end.
Henley 2nd XI host newly promoted Hurst at the Breakspear ground this Saturday.

Henley 2nd XI secured a 4 wicket win against Teddington Town in the first game of their league season thanks to a superb 137 from Chad Keegan and six wickets from new signing Azeem Hussain.
Teddington won the toss, and on a good looking pitch, elected to bat. They started well with both openers finding the boundary. Watchorn especially chancing his arm on anything pitched up, before Chamberlain, who bowled well throughout, claimed the wicket of Mohabir. Teddington continued to score freely on a small ground with a fast outfield and at drinks were 65-1 from 17 overs. The home side continued to attack despite Andy White removing Simmonds. However the introduction of Hussain put Henley back in the driving seat. He picked up 6 wickets for 65 in an accurate spell of intelligent slowbowling, including a fantastic catch from skipper Smith.
At 121-7 Henley looked forward to an early finish but, as is often the case, the opposition had other ideas. Patel and Dardagan went agricultural for the next 15 overs towards the end of the innings. However, despite nice flight, Yandell was unfortunate enough to discover their hitting zone on multiple occasions. Hancock bowled a miserly spell in the middle of the innings and was unlucky not to get any success. Chamberlain wrapped up the Teddington innings with a rising delivery that was too quick for Patel who was caught at mid off by Keegan
Teddington finished on a score of 231, which was always going to be difficult to defend on a small pitch and a good wicket, although they were undoubtedly not expecting what followed. After Hussain was dismissed early on Keegan came to the wicket. After taking an over to get his bearings he never looked in trouble. His fantastic 67 ball knock included 13 fours and 11 sixes. Davison supported him from the other end. His patient innings of 37 was just what the team needed. He was bowled trying to move the game to its conclusion. Henley then lost 3 more wickets which left Darren White (22) to guide things home with the evergreen JC Satin.
This was a good start to the 2nd's League season and they will be keen to continue the momentum as they entertain Thatcham Town 2nd XI next week (17 May) at the Brakspear ground.
